GENERATOR INSPECTION CHECKLIST

A buyer-side inspection framework for checking the agreed generator specification before production, during production and before shipment release.

Final inspection can find defects. It cannot always recover a wrong component, wrong configuration or wrong production decision made weeks earlier.
01 / INSPECTION STAGES

CHECK THE RIGHT THING AT THE RIGHT TIME.

Each stage exists because some problems are easiest to prevent early, while others can only be confirmed on the finished machine.

PREBefore production

Confirm requirement, supplier basis, approved components and critical deviations.

MIDDuring production

Verify that the actual unit being built still matches the approved specification.

FINALFinished unit

Check function, workmanship, labeling, packaging and documentation.

RELEASEBefore shipment

Review test results, unresolved issues and corrective-action evidence.

02 / PRE-PRODUCTION VERIFICATION

LOCK THE BASIS BEFORE THE FACTORY STARTS BUILDING.

Pre-production control is where the buyer prevents ambiguity from becoming a production fact.

RequirementApplication, kW/kVA, voltage, frequency, phase, duty and site conditions.
EngineBrand, model, rating basis, origin, governing and emissions requirement.
AlternatorBrand/model, copper winding, insulation class, AVR, excitation and temperature rise.
ControllerBrand/model, functions, protection, AMF/ATS, communication and synchronizing needs.
CoolingAmbient-temperature basis, radiator, fan, airflow and derating assumptions.
Fuel systemTank size, autonomy, filtration, fittings and external connection scope.
Canopy / frameMaterial, coating, acoustic basis, access doors, lifting and serviceability.
DocumentsApproved drawing, specification, BOM / component basis, labels and manuals.
Buyer rule: anything important enough to affect performance, compliance, service or comparison should not remain “supplier standard” unless that standard is defined.
03 / MID-PRODUCTION INSPECTION

VERIFY THE BUILD BEFORE THE UNIT IS CLOSED UP.

This is the stage for checking substitutions, assembly quality and configuration drift while corrective action is still practical.

Component matchEngine, alternator, controller, breaker, radiator, battery, charger and key accessories.
Wiring & assemblyCable routing, terminals, grounding, protection, clamps, connectors and workmanship.
Mechanical fitMounting, alignment, anti-vibration, exhaust, cooling path and service access.
Canopy fabricationPanel fit, welds, hinges, locks, sealing, coating and corrosion protection.
Fuel / fluid systemTank, hoses, clamps, filters, leakage risk and drain/access points.
Deviation controlAny component or configuration change should be recorded and approved before continuation.
04 / FINAL INSPECTION

THE FINISHED MACHINE SHOULD MATCH THE APPROVED MACHINE.

Final inspection should confirm the completed product, not rediscover what the specification was supposed to be.

IdentityModel, serial number, nameplate, ratings and labels.
AppearancePaint, dents, scratches, corrosion, panel fit and cleanliness.
AssemblyFasteners, wiring, terminals, hoses, clamps, batteries and accessories.
OperationStart/stop, alarms, protections, controller, breaker and emergency stop.
Electrical outputVoltage, frequency, phase balance and no-load / loaded condition.
LeakageFuel, oil, coolant and abnormal vibration / sound.
DocumentsManuals, test report, packing list, drawings, certificates where applicable.
PackagingProtection, moisture control, blocking, labels, accessories and shipping suitability.
05 / FAT & LOAD TEST

A TEST RESULT WITHOUT A TEST BASIS IS NOT ENOUGH.

The buyer should know what load was applied, for how long, under what ambient condition and what acceptance limits were used.

Load profile25% / 50% / 75% / 100% or project-specific steps.
DurationEnough time to observe thermal, voltage and frequency stability.
Voltage / frequencyRecord stability and deviation under load changes.
TemperatureMonitor coolant, oil, alternator and relevant thermal conditions.
ProtectionsVerify alarms, shutdowns and emergency functions where required.
EvidencePhotos, readings, test report and unresolved-item record.
06 / RELEASE DECISION

PASS / HOLD / REWORK — NOT “LOOKS OK.”

PASSRequirement met. Evidence complete. Shipment can be released.
HOLDOpen issue exists. Shipment remains blocked pending evidence or decision.
REWORKCorrective action is required, followed by re-verification.
07 / COMMON INSPECTION FAILURES

WHAT GETS MISSED WHEN THE CHECKLIST IS TOO GENERIC.

01Checking appearance but not configuration

A clean machine can still contain the wrong alternator, controller, AVR or breaker.

02Checking one sample only

Batch consistency can matter as much as the quality of the best unit presented for inspection.

03Accepting “tested” without evidence

Ask what was tested, under what condition and against what acceptance criteria.

04Leaving packing to the end

Transport damage often starts with inadequate blocking, moisture control or accessory protection.

05Closing a defect without re-checking

Corrective action should be verified, not assumed.

06Using the same checklist for every generator

Duty, site, rating, market and configuration change what should be checked.

MFG BUYER VIEW

INSPECTION IS A RELEASE CONTROL, NOT A PHOTO COLLECTION.

The purpose of inspection is to protect the approved requirement through production and shipment. Photos are useful only when they prove a defined check.

MFG POWER structures inspection around requirement, component basis, production stage, corrective action and release evidence.

NEED AN INSPECTION PLAN FOR AN ACTIVE ORDER?

TURN THE APPROVED SPECIFICATION INTO CHECKABLE EVIDENCE.

Send the PO, specification, supplier drawing or existing checklist. MFG POWER can help identify what should be verified at each production stage and what evidence should be required before release.
