HOW TO COMPARE GENERATOR QUOTATIONS

A buyer-side framework for finding the specification, component and scope differences hidden behind the price.

The cheapest quotation is not always the lowest-cost option. First confirm whether the suppliers are quoting the same machine, the same duty and the same scope.
01 / NORMALIZE THE BASICS

MAKE THE HEADLINE NUMBERS COMPARABLE FIRST.

Before reviewing components, confirm that each quotation is based on the same electrical and operating requirement.

Rated powerkVA, kW and power-factor basis.
DutyPrime, standby or another stated rating basis.
Voltage / frequencySame voltage, Hz, phase and neutral arrangement.
Site conditionAmbient temperature, altitude and environmental assumptions.
ApplicationBackup, prime, construction, rental, remote or industrial use.
AcceptanceSame testing, documentation and release requirement.
02 / ENGINE

“SAME BRAND” DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN SAME ENGINE BASIS.

Model, rating, emissions, governing and origin can all change the cost and performance.

Brand / modelExact engine model, not only the brand family.
Rating basisPrime / standby engine output at the stated speed and condition.
GoverningMechanical / electronic control and speed response.
EmissionsMarket-specific emissions configuration where applicable.
Origin / supplyManufacturing source, local assembly or imported configuration.
03 / ALTERNATOR & ELECTRICAL BASIS

THE ALTERNATOR CAN CHANGE PERFORMANCE EVEN WHEN THE ENGINE IS THE SAME.

ALTERNATORBrand / model

Check exact model and rating basis.

WINDINGCopper or other material

Do not assume the conductor basis from the quotation title.

AVRBrand / model / regulation

Voltage-control quality matters for load response.

INSULATIONClass and temperature rise

Thermal design can change operating margin.

EXCITATIONSystem architecture

Shunt, PMG or other excitation basis can affect performance.

BREAKERBrand / rating / poles

Protection scope should be comparable.

04 / PACKAGE DIFFERENCES

THE “GENERATOR SET” PRICE INCLUDES MORE THAN ENGINE + ALTERNATOR.

Cooling, canopy, fuel system and accessories are common places where quotation gaps appear.

RadiatorAmbient design basis, fan and airflow.
CanopySteel thickness, coating, acoustic target, doors and service access.
Fuel tankCapacity, runtime, gauge, drain and external connection.
Battery systemBattery, charger and isolation arrangement.
ExhaustSilencer, flex, rain cap and connection scope.
AccessoriesHeater, charger, ATS, synchronization, trailer, sockets or project options.
05 / TESTING & ACCEPTANCE

A LOWER PRICE CAN COME FROM A LIGHTER TEST BASIS.

Check whether suppliers include the same inspection, FAT and evidence package.

LOAD TESTWhat load profile?

25 / 50 / 75 / 100% or project-specific sequence.

DURATIONHow long?

A short demonstration and a meaningful performance test are not the same.

ACCEPTANCEWhat limits?

Voltage, frequency, temperature, leakage, alarms and shutdowns.

EVIDENCEWhat records?

Photos, readings, report, serial traceability and unresolved-item list.

06 / WARRANTY, SPARES & AFTER-SALES

WARRANTY YEARS ALONE DO NOT DEFINE AFTER-SALES VALUE.

Warranty termMonths / hours and start point.
CoverageParts, labor, freight, consumables and exclusions.
Claim processEvidence required, approval path and response time.
Spare partsInitial package and long-term availability.
Technical supportRemote diagnostics, drawings, manuals and troubleshooting.
Replacement pathHow failed components are actually supplied to the buyer.
07 / HIDDEN EXCLUSIONS

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED CAN EXPLAIN THE PRICE GAP.

01ATS / switchgear not included

One quote may include system integration while another prices only the genset.

02Testing scope not included

FAT, witness testing or evidence packs can be excluded.

03Market compliance not included

Labels, documentation or project-specific requirements may be extra.

04Freight / packaging basis differs

Export packaging, container loading or local transport may not be comparable.

05Commissioning not included

Site startup and technical support can be outside the supplier scope.

06Spare parts not included

Initial consumables and critical spares may be quoted separately.

MFG BUYER VIEW

COMPARE THE SCOPE BEFORE YOU COMPARE THE PRICE.

MFG POWER treats quotation comparison as a specification-control exercise. The goal is to identify what is different, undefined or excluded before the buyer selects a supplier.

Once the basis is normalized, the real commercial difference becomes much easier to see.

HAVE TWO OR MORE GENERATOR QUOTATIONS?

FIND THE REAL DIFFERENCE BEFORE YOU CHOOSE THE PRICE.

Send the quotations and technical sheets. MFG POWER can help normalize the rating basis, identify component and scope gaps, and show which items still need clarification.
