HOW TO QUALIFY A GENERATOR SUPPLIER IN CHINA

A buyer-side framework for checking whether a supplier can consistently build, control and support the generator you intend to buy.

Supplier qualification is not proving that a company exists. It is proving that the company can control the result you need.
01 / VERIFY THE ENTITY

KNOW WHO IS SIGNING THE CONTRACT — AND WHO IS BUILDING THE MACHINE.

Start by separating the legal entity, sales entity, manufacturing site and any upstream assembly or component partners.

Legal companyRegistered entity, business scope and contracting party.
Factory locationWhere final assembly, testing and packing actually happen.
Export entityWho invoices, exports and receives payment.
Brand ownershipWho owns the brand, drawings and product configuration.
Key upstream partnersEngine, alternator, controller and other critical suppliers.
Responsibility boundaryWho owns engineering, QC, warranty and corrective action.
02 / MANUFACTURING BOUNDARY

“FACTORY” DOES NOT TELL YOU WHAT THE SUPPLIER ACTUALLY CONTROLS.

Generator suppliers can range from assemblers to integrators with stronger engineering and supply-chain ownership. The buyer should understand the boundary.

AssemblyWhat is assembled in-house versus purchased as a finished module?
FabricationAre base frames, canopies, tanks and panels made internally or subcontracted?
ElectricalWho builds harnesses, panels, ATS or synchronization systems?
TestingWhat can the supplier actually test in-house?
EngineeringCan they review drawings, deviations, cooling, controls and project requirements?
03 / ENGINEERING CAPABILITY

CAN THE SUPPLIER EXPLAIN WHY THE CONFIGURATION IS RIGHT?

SIZINGLoad and duty judgement

Can they discuss starting load, duty, derating and application rather than only quote a catalog number?

COOLINGAmbient and airflow

Can they explain radiator basis and high-temperature implications?

ELECTRICALAlternator and controls

Can they explain AVR, excitation, protection and control architecture?

DEVIATIONSChange management

Can they document and close deviations before production?

DRAWINGSTechnical documentation

Can they provide useful GA, wiring and project documents where required?

APPLICATIONProject understanding

Can they adapt the package to the real site rather than default to “standard”?

04 / QUALITY CONTROL

ASK HOW THE APPROVED BUILD IS PROTECTED THROUGH PRODUCTION.

Quality capability is not the same as owning inspection tools. The supplier should have a process for component control, assembly checks, testing and corrective action.

Incoming controlHow are critical components checked on receipt?
Component traceabilityCan engine, alternator, controller and other agreed parts be traced?
In-process checksWhat is verified before the unit is fully closed and finished?
Final inspectionWhat is checked on the completed generator?
FAT / load testWhat test capability exists, and what evidence is retained?
Corrective actionHow are defects contained, corrected and re-verified?
05 / CAPACITY & DELIVERY

CAN THE SUPPLIER EXECUTE THE ORDER — NOT JUST WIN IT?

Capacity should be checked against the specific order size, product mix and delivery window.

CAPACITYActual output

What can be produced per week or month for the relevant product type?

BOTTLENECKCritical constraints

Engine availability, canopy fabrication, testing bays and skilled labor may limit output.

LEAD TIMERealistic schedule

Does the delivery plan include component procurement, production, testing and packing?

ORDER MIXComplexity

Mixed models and customized specifications can reduce effective capacity.

06 / AFTER-SALES & WARRANTY

QUALIFY THE SUPPORT PATH BEFORE THERE IS A FAILURE.

Warranty definitionMonths, hours, coverage and exclusions.
Claim workflowEvidence required, decision authority and response path.
Spare partsAvailability, pricing and delivery of common and critical parts.
Technical supportTroubleshooting, drawings, manuals and remote engineering support.
Replacement processHow approved replacement parts are actually dispatched.
07 / RED FLAGS

SIGNALS THAT NEED MORE VERIFICATION.

01Everything is “no problem”

Strong suppliers usually explain limits, assumptions and trade-offs.

02Critical component brands stay undefined

This increases substitution risk after the order is placed.

03Factory access is restricted without a clear reason

The buyer should understand where production and testing happen.

04Test evidence cannot be tied to serial numbers

Generic reports are weak proof for the actual order.

05Lead time is much shorter than the supply chain allows

The schedule may depend on unverified stock or future substitutions.

06Warranty is broad but the claim path is vague

A promise without process can become difficult to enforce.

MFG BUYER VIEW

QUALIFY THE SUPPLIER AGAINST THE ORDER YOU PLAN TO PLACE.

A supplier can be legitimate and still be a poor fit for a specific generator project. MFG POWER separates identity, manufacturing boundary, engineering, quality, capacity and support before deciding whether a supplier is suitable.

The question is not only “is this a real factory?” It is “can this supplier reliably deliver this requirement?”

EVALUATING A GENERATOR SUPPLIER IN CHINA?

CHECK THE CAPABILITY BEHIND THE SALES CLAIM.

Send the supplier name, quotation, specification or audit information. MFG POWER can help identify what is verified, what is still only a claim, and what should be checked before commitment.
